Feeding the Homeless Project, Inc. (FTHP) has evolved from a grass roots effort among a few passionate friends and colleagues who began by flipping pancakes one morning on a street corner in downtown Atlanta. We are now an official non-profit organization- a Georgia corporation that retains an approved 501(c)(3) status and is managed by an all-volunteer board of directors.
We are proud to say we are succeeding at the two initial objectives in our Mission Statement: to bring attention to the plight of the homeless in Atlanta and to provide opportunities for volunteers to become directly involved in serving the less fortunate. Our primary service is to prepare and serve approximately 150 hot breakfasts every Saturday morning on the street in downtown Atlanta. In 2017, we served all 52 weeks, approximately 9,000 breakfasts. Along the way, we created more than 1,000 opportunities for volunteers to serve with us. And we did it all with an all-volunteer crew.
FTHP’s growth and financial sustainability owes huge thanks to a wide array of corporate sponsors, many from the commercial real estate industry where FTHP founders have enjoyed long careers. Through our sponsors’ generous support, we have been able to sustain our operations and recruit leadership to guide our future. And, of course, many of their partners and employees have participated as volunteers on the street as part of our weekly community service events.
Another clear outcome of our work is that we are breaking down the fear and resistance barriers formerly held by volunteers (now more than 800 strong!). We also firmly believe that we are building a base of trust among the men and women we serve on the streets. We don’t judge or criticize the reality of those less fortunate- we just feed people. That attitude over the past ten years has produced tremendous returns for both our volunteers and the people we serve.
